Revett Eldred
Until 2012, Revett Eldred was co-owner and Chief Technical Officer of Athene Offices & Services, a company that leased high-end furnished and fully equipped offices to business people and professionals. With 170 offices in three Executive Centre locations in suburban Calgary, the company also offered a full suite of support services to its clients.  It sold in June 2012 to the Regus Group, the world’s largest executive centre company with 1,100 locations in 500 cities in 85 countries. Prior to co-founding Athene, Revett started, built, operated, and sold Minerva Technology, Inc., one of Calgary’s high-tech success stories. The company developed custom computer systems, mainly for the oil and gas industry. It competed effectively and profitably in a highly competitive business with few barriers to entry. Twice ranked among Canada’s 50 fastest growing companies, Minerva was a 1991 winner of the prestigious Canada Award for Business Excellence, Canada’s highest award for quality. It was Microsoft’s first Canadian partner and was once ranked by Microsoft as one of their three best partners worldwide, twice winning awards for most innovative systems developed using Microsoft technology. The company was profitable every year of its existence. It employed 250 staff when it was sold in 1997 after 12 years of operation, debt free and with no outside investors. Revett personally was featured in the inaugural edition of ‘Business in Calgary’ magazine as Calgary’s Business Person of the Year and was profiled as one of ten successful immigrants in the Canadian government pavilion at the Seville World Fair. In 1990, Profit Magazine named him one of Canada’s ‘50 Best Bosses’. Before Athene, Revett spent his entire career in the computer business, starting in the UK in 1966. He co-developed the control software for the world’s first automated goldmine. He later adapted the same software to control the operation of a large fuel tanker filling and distribution depot.  He once made a small programming error that almost bankrupted the Aston Martin car company.  He immigrated to Canada in 1969 and
developed computer applications for NATO, Transport Canada, National Library, and numerous smaller clients. He managed the project that indexed and automated the retrieval of information about every artifact held in all federally funded Canadian museums. He was a member of the Canadian Computer/Communications Task Force whose report, Branching Out, set the stage for the implementation of DataPac, the world’s first packet-switched digital communication network. He joined DMR Group in 1979, where he became Western Region Manager of Office Automation before leaving to found Minerva in 1985. Revett attended the Royal Air Force Technical College and the University of Birmingham, and is a 1993 graduate of Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management Program. In 2005, he served as the first Entrepreneur in Residence at Innovate Calgary, a high-tech incubator jointly owned by the University of Calgary, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Calgary. In that role he acted as advisor and the ‘voice of experience’ for some 75 technology startups. As a resource for TEC, The Executive Committee, he taught more than 1,000 Canadian, American, and Australian executives how to plan for effective computing and information management in a small and mid-size business environment. Until leaving Calgary in 2012, he was a guest lecturer in the University of Calgary’s MBA program, was a mentor to MBA students as part of the Haskayne Mentorship Program, was a repeat judge in the Haskayne School of Business’s 24-hour Case Competition, and taught ‘Bootstrapping’ in Innovate Calgary’s Financing Your Vision seminar. He was for many years a member of the Computer Technology Industry Advisory Committee for Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.  In his youth, he became the youngest person in the UK ever to earn a Private Pilot’s Licence. Revett is married to Shaune, a small business TEC Chair and formerly founder and President of Athene.  Revett was an early member of TEC Canada in Calgary.  They live in Kelowna, BC.
